Top two seeds in women's singles wiped out in Tahoe China Open
Defending champion P.V. Sindhu of India was bundled out of the USD700,000 Tahoe China Open Superseries Premier in Fuzhou on Friday.
The Indian Rio Olympics silver medallist and runners-up in the World Championships in Glasgow in August gave a below par performance against China's Gao Fangjie in the quarter-finals and went down tamely 11-21, 10-21 in 38 minutes.
For Fangjie it was a huge win as in the past she had never got past the first round in the a superseries tournament and to beat the defending champion would not have come at a better time for the 19-year-old Chinese.
There were more shocks at the Haixia Olympic Sports Center in Fuzhou on Friday when top seed and world number one Tai Tzu Ying also fell by the wayside to Thailand's former world number one Ratchanok Intanon.
The Thai ace came back from a game down to snatch a 10-21, 21-9, 22-20 win in a marathon 73 minutes - thanks to her patience and coolness when it mattered most.
Ratchanok will face Japan's fifth seed Akane Yamaguchi for a place in the final. Yamaguchi was a straight games 21-11, 21-19 winner of Chinese qualifier Ji Shuting.
Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, winner of the tournament in 2015, was also bundled out when he lost to Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long.
Ka Long won 21-12, 15-21, 21-19 in 71 minutes. It was Chong Wei's first defeat to Ka Long in six meetings.
World champion and top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark remained in the hunt with a 21-17, 21-14 win over Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei and will face Ka Long in the semifinals.
China's Olympic champion Chen Long who needed three games to subdue his compatriot Shi Yuqi and second seed Son Wan-ho of South Korea are also through.
Sixth seeded Chen Long defeated Shi Yuqi 21-13, 16-21, 21-14 in a 72-minute encounter while Wan-ho struggled past Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu 21-14, 12-21, 21-18.
