Indah Cahya and the Road to an Olympic dream

Like all athletes around the world, Indonesia’s Indah Cahya Sari Jamil has been ‘resting’ due to the Covid-19 global pandemic which led to the suspension of all badminton competitions. For the 18-year-old Indah Cahya, it is but a temporary respite in her charge towards achieving greatness on the world stage. And when the competition resumes, fans can expect nothing but the best from her.

The rising Asian star has already created waves over the last few years after sensationally winning the World Junior and Asian Junior mixed doubles titles, with her partner Leo Rolly Carnando. Last year, she was in the victorious Indonesian team that defeated China in the final of the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships Team, also known as the Suhandinata Cup.

The youngster, who hails from Makassar in South Sulawesi, has caught the eye of many. Her remarkable progress was mentioned on the official BWF website, stating that she is ‘on the radar for Indonesia as one of their brightest mixed doubles prospects’.

While she has displayed superb performances in the juniors, she also delivered some promising results in the senior levels by reaching the quarterfinals of Akita Masters and the Malaysia International Series last year, and the Austrian Open earlier this year. Soon after, the pandemic struck and all tournaments were suspended, forcing her to take a break.

She has proven to be a versatile player and combines well when paired up with other partners in the mixed doubles. Indah Cahya also features in the women’s doubles.

The youngest of four siblings, Indah’s father Jamil is a Physical Education teacher and also a badminton coach, which probably encouraged her move into the sport.

It was not an easy start though, she had said, after missing the cut to join the PB Djarum club as a singles player in 2013. But she persevered and was accepted as a doubles player the following year. From then on, Indah Cahya worked hard and committed herself to the game. In her quest to be a top professional, she finds time between her training schedule to take English classes.

Indah Cahya has a dream, and that’s to emulate her idol Liliyana Natsir, Indonesia’s mixed doubles Olympic gold medallist and former world champion. At the rate she is progressing, there is every chance she will go all the way and live her dream.
