Mixed doubles Dechapol-Sapsiree clinch it for Thailand against Hong Kong

It was down the wire for Thailand before they clinched a nail-biting 3-2 win over Hong Kong in a crucial Group 1A clash in the Sudirman Cup Mixed Team Championships at the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium in Gold Coast, Australia on Monday.

It was Hong Kong's second defeat in as many matches following their 4-1 defeat to defending and 10-time champions China in their opening match.

Hong Kong were 2-0 down after the losing the men's doubles and the women's singles. However, Thailand found themselves at the receiving end in the men's singles and the women's doubles which left the score tied at 2-2.

It was left to the mixed doubles for the winning point and Thailand's rising pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai (World No 9) – the Asian runners-up – duly delivered after clinching a 21-16, 21-16 win over World No 12 Reginald Lee Chun Hei-Chau Hoi Wah in 35 minutes.

Thailand seemed to be sailing to an easy win when Bodin Isara-Nipitphon Phuangphuapet won a 62-minute three-set thriller 22-20, 17-21, 21-11 against Or Chin Chung-Tang Chung Man in the men's doubles for the first point.

Former World No 1 and currently ranked No 8 Ratchanok Intanon made it 2-0 for the Thais. The former world champion rode to a 21-14, 21-17 win over Yip Pui Yin in 47 minutes.
Hong Kong reduced the deficit when world No 10 Angus Ng Ka Long outplayed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk (world No 11) 21-11, 21-16.

Then came the shock defeat of No 11 ranked Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai in the women's doubles at the hands of world No 39 Poon Lok Yan-Tse Ying Suet. The Thais lost 15-21, 21-18, 14-21 in a marathon 76 minutes.

Luckily for Thailand Dechapol-Sapsiree, who have been made inroads in their game this year, made it count in the decider. China and Thailand will now battle for the top place in the group.

In Group 1B Taiwan led by women's world number one Tai Tzu Ying, powered to a 4-1 over Russia. The defeat knocked Russia out of contention. The Russian lost to South Korea by a similar margin in their opening match on Sunday.
