Chinese Taipei stun Korea as China show their might in Gold Coast

Defending champions China stayed on course for their 11th Sudirman Cup title with a 5-0 whitewash of Thailand in their Group 1A match while Chinese Taipei upset third seeds South Korea in Group 1B.

This was the scenario at the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium in Gold Coast, Australia in the mixed team championships in the morning session.

The Chinese Taipei-Korea match was decided only in the last tie of the match with Wang Chi-Lin-Lee Chia Hsin snatching the winning point for Chinese Taipei (5/8 seeds) with a come-from behind 11-21, 21-18, 21-16 win over Choi Solgyu-Chae Yoo-jung in the mixed doubles in 59 minutes.

Chi-Lin turned out to be the hero for Chinese Taipei's win. He also featured in his country's first point with partner Chen Hung-Ling in the men's doubles. The Chinese Taipei duo made short-work of Korean youngsters Kim Dukyoung-Park Kyung-hoon 21-19, 21-13 in 36 minutes.

World No 1 Tai Tzu Ying was taken the full distance but the 22-year-old Chinese Taipei lass still showed class in her 21-15, 15-21, 21-14 win over Korean number one Sung Ji-Hyun in the women's singles after a 66-minute battle to put her team 2-0 up.

The Koreans, however, hit back to win the men's singles through Son-Wan-ho and the women's doubles through Chang Ye-na-Lee So-hee which left the score tied at 2-2.

Won-ho outplayed Chinese Taipei's top man shuttler Chou Tien Chen 21-18, 21-17 in 50 minutes while Ye-na-So-hee tamed Hsu Ya-Ching-Wu Ti-Jung 21-13, 21-18.

It was then left to the mixed doubles to decide the outcome and Chi-Lin-Chia Hsin made it count for Chinese Taipei for the upset win.

China simply packed too power for the Thais and never looked back after Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen won the opening point in the men's doubles against Kittinupong Kedren-Dechapol Puavaranukroh 21-11, 21-19.

The rest of the points also came in straight sets with Chen Yufei (women's singles), Chen Long (men's singles), Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan (women's doubles) and Lu Kai-Huang Yaqiong (mixed doubles) winning their respective matches.
