KOREA SCORES ITS FIRST UBER CUP SUCCESS

Wednesday, 19 May 2010
KOREA SCORES ITS FIRST UBER CUP SUCCESS Korea sprang a major upset with a 3-1 win over highly favoured China in the nation’s first ever Uber Cup success. This was also the Korean girls’ first decisive victory over China in the ladies Team Championship since the two nations met the first time in 1988. Since then, Korea had faced China on four occasions - ’90, ’92, ’02, ’04 – and each time had returned home second best. That scene was set for repeat at the Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday afternoon basing on the strength of the two teams in the run-up to the 2010 Uber Cup Final. Also on paper, China was markedly higher ranked in both the Singles and Doubles and it was a very long shot anyone would have forecast a Korean surprise. But what probably played a pivotal role in the final outcome was the determination of the Koreans to take the fight to the Chinese girls. They had played bridesmaid to China and Indonesia in recent times and had now come to believe that they had the players, committed and strong enough to surprise an understandably over-confident China. The opening Singles and Doubles which saw China roll out its world’s top ranked players proved wanting against the determined Korean girls. Then with two games down in double quick time and three to go, China was very much against the wall and the shocked Chinese management could do little as the Korean charge continued into the second Ladies Doubles and set off unprecedented celebrations as Korea secured a well-deserved 3-1 win and the right to the covered Uber Cup for the first time. China though picked up some consolation when Lin Dan and his team-mates outplayed Taufik Hidayat’s Indonesia 3-0 win and retain the Thomas Cup for yet another season. THE FINAL RESULTS Thomas Cup CHINA 3 INDONESIA 0 Lin Dan beat Taufik Hidayat 21-7, 21-14 Yun Cai & Fu Haifeng beat Markis Kido & Hendra Setiawan 25-23, 16-21, 21-12 Chen Jin beat Simon Santoso 19-21, 21-17, 21-7 Uber Cup KOREA 3 CHINA 1 Bae Seung Hee beat Wang Yihan 23-21, 21-11 Lee Hyo-jung & Kim Min-jung beat Ma Jin & Wang Xiaoli 18-21, 21-12, 21-15 Sung Ji-hyun lost to Wang Xin 14-21, 21-16, 7-21 Lee Kyung-won & Ha Jung Eun beat Du Jing & Yu Yang 19-21, 21-14, 21-19
