JAPAN KNOCKS MALAYSIA OUT OF GROUP LEADERSHIP

Wednesday, 12 May 2010
JAPAN KNOCKS MALAYSIA OUT OF GROUP LEADERSHIP Japan caused the first ripple in the otherwise placid waters of the Thomas Cup Final in Kuala Lumpur last night when it edged out an overconfident Malaysia 3-2 in the final group B tie to top the group. That unexpected victory over host Malaysia has ensured it a seeding in the last eight and opened up the real possibility of the Japanese men making their first ever appearance in the Final of the Thomas Cup scheduled for Sunday. In the Draw that followed to determine who plays who in the quarter-finals, Japan has been drawn to meet Germany in the last eight and a win there will pit it against the winner of the India-Indonesia tie in the semi-finals. Japan could not have asked for a more convenient route to realize its most cherished dream of winning the coveted trophy for the first time. Malaysia’s defeat last night has now drawn the host against Denmark and progress to the next round would be that much more difficult with the European champion playing to good form. The quarter-finals matches will be played this afternoon at 2.00 and evening at 6.00 and will have China play Korea, Denmark take on Malaysia, Germany against Japan and India versus Indonesia. In the final group matches completed last night China beat Korea 4-1 India beat Australia 4-1 Japan beat Malaysia 3-2 Denmark beat Germany 4-1 In Uber Cup tie, the quarter-finals draw is China vs India Indonesia vs Malaysia Denmark vs Japan Russia vs Korea In the final group matches also completed last night, Indonesia beat Denmark 5-0 Japan beat Russia 5-0 China beat Malaysia 5-0 Korea beat India 4-1 The Thomas and Uber Cups matches are being played simultaneously at the Putra Badminton Stadium in the Malaysian capital.
