THE QUARTER-FINALIST WILL BE IDENTIFIED TONIGHT
Tonight world badminton will experience the final touch to the process of separating the proverbial ‘wheat from the chaff’ when India takes on Australia in the final group match in the Thomas Cup competition.
The top eight from the Uber Cup and seven from the Thomas Cup into the quarter-final were confirmed when play ended at the Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur last night. There were no surprises.
In Thomas Cup matches last night, Indonesia, Korea, Germany and Japan moved safely through with decisive wins over their opponents. While the rest secured white-wash wins, multiple champions Indonesia ran into a spot of problem. Lead player Taufik Hidayat was stretched to a third game and the second-ranked Sony Dwi Kuncoro retired with back injury while trailing his Indian opponent in the rubber. The final 4-1 score-line may look academically impressive but the Indonesian management will have reasons to be concerned. From here on, competition will be markedly tightened and only the best and the fittest will survive. Indonesia will be hard pressed if it happens to run into China, Malaysia, Denmark or Korea for a place in the last four.
Tonight’s matches, except in the case with Group D in the Thomas Cup series, will basically decide the various group leaders in both the Cups. Aside scoring a physiological advantage, tie winners tonight will be stronger placed when the Draw for the quarter-finals is finalized at the end of the last match. The India-Australia tie will determine which of the two will move into the last quarter-final slot still available.
Tonight’s lineup will be:
Thomas Cup
Group A: China vs Korea
Group B: Malaysia vs Japan
Group C: Denmark vs Germany
Group D: India vs Australia
In the Uber Cup competition, group toppers will also be decided tonight with
China playing Malaysia in group A, Indonesia taking on Denmark in Group B, Russia and Japan meet in Group C and in Group D, Korea will play India.
Group matches are being played at two different times. The first set of two Thomas and two Uber Cup matches start at 12.00 noon local time and the second at 6.00pm also local time.
